Appealing mix of people and amenities
Spaarndammerbuurt was originally a working-class neighborhood. Dock workers lived conveniently close to their work in housing designed in the Amsterdamse School architectural style. By 1906, a tram was already running from here to Central Station, making the neighborhood easily accessible. The composition of residents changed over the years and is very mixed these days - which is one of Spaarndammerbuurt's greatest strengths.
This diversity has led to an enormous great variety in amenities, shops and restaurants. Most shops can be found on Spaarndammerstraat, which is at just four minutes' walking distance from Bredius. Along the way you will come across local shops, schools, child care centers, a theater and restaurants. And, of course, the world-famous Museum 't Schip ("the Ship") by architect Michel de Klerk. Originally a public housing complex for housing corporation Eigen Haard, the museum owes its name to the original shape of the building. Walking along the Zaanstraat towards Central Station, you will quickly reach Haarlemmerdijk or Westerpark where there is always a festival, party or performance to enjoy.
